Generator Running But Not Powering Anything?

June 24, 2026

You pulled the generator out, got it started, and it sounds like it's running fine — but nothing in your house is turning on. No lights, no refrigerator, no HVAC. Just the hum of an engine doing absolutely nothing useful.

This is one of the most frustrating generator problems homeowners in Central Oklahoma run into, especially during storm season when the stakes are high and every minute without power matters. The good news: there are several known causes, and a licensed electrician can diagnose and fix most of them. Here's what's likely going on.

1. A Breaker Has Tripped — Inside the Generator Itself

This is the first thing to check and the most common cause of a generator running with zero output.

Most generators have their own internal circuit breaker — separate from your home's electrical panel — that automatically trips if the generator gets overloaded. When it trips, the engine keeps running, but power output stops completely. It's a safety mechanism, not a sign of major damage.

Look for a reset button or small breaker switch on your generator's control panel. If it's tripped, switch it off fully, then reset it. Before restarting, disconnect some of your load — you may have been trying to run more than the generator can handle.

If the breaker trips again immediately, the problem is something deeper and you'll need a professional.

2. Loss of Residual Magnetism

This one surprises a lot of people, but it's actually very common — especially with generators that have been sitting in a garage or shed for months (or longer) without being run.

Generators produce electricity through a rotating magnetic field inside the alternator. When the generator shuts down, it retains a small amount of that magnetism — called residual magnetism — which is what allows it to kick-start power generation the next time you fire it up. If that residual magnetism fades, the engine runs perfectly but produces no electricity at all.

Residual magnetism is lost when:

  • The generator has been stored unused for a long period
  • It was shut off while still under load (devices still connected)
  • It ran too long with nothing plugged into it
  • It's brand new and experienced vibration during shipping

This is fixable — a process called "field flashing" uses a 12-volt battery to restore the magnetism — but it should be done by someone who knows what they're doing. Incorrect flashing can damage the alternator.

This is also a good argument for running your standby or portable generator briefly once a month, even if you don't need it. Regular use prevents residual magnetism loss and surfaces any problems before a real emergency.

3. A Faulty Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR)

The Automatic Voltage Regulator is the component that keeps your generator's output voltage steady and usable. Without it working correctly, the generator may produce electricity that's too erratic or too weak to actually power anything — or it produces no output at all.

Signs the AVR may be the problem:

  • The engine sounds normal and runs at the right speed
  • A voltmeter shows zero or inconsistent voltage at the outlets
  • Lights flicker on and immediately die when you try to use them

AVR failure is common in older generators or those that have been subjected to electrical surges. This is not a DIY repair — the AVR needs to be tested and replaced by a professional.

4. Damaged Alternator Windings

The alternator is the part of the generator that actually converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. Inside it are copper windings that, when rotated through a magnetic field, generate your electricity. If those windings are burnt, broken, or shorted — the engine runs fine but no power is produced.

Alternator winding damage often happens because of:

  • Running the generator under heavy load for extended periods without proper maintenance
  • Overheating from a dirty or poorly ventilated unit
  • Electrical surge or lightning strike

Burnt windings usually produce a faint electrical burning smell. This is one of the more serious and expensive repairs — in some cases it may make more sense to replace the unit than repair it. A technician can advise you on the cost comparison.

5. Loose, Corroded, or Damaged Connections

Even if everything inside the generator is working perfectly, the power still has to travel through wires, outlets, and — if you're using a standby system — a transfer switch to actually reach your home. Any weak link in that chain can result in zero power delivery.

Common connection problems include:

  • Corroded output terminals on the generator itself
  • A damaged or improperly connected transfer switch
  • Frayed or deteriorated extension cords or power cables
  • Loose wiring inside the generator's control panel

If you're using a portable generator with extension cords, inspect every connection point. If you have a whole-home standby generator wired into your electrical panel through a transfer switch, the transfer switch is the most likely culprit in this category and should be inspected by a licensed electrician.

6. The Low Oil Pressure Safety Sensor Has Cut Output

Many modern generators have a low oil pressure shutoff that kills power output — while keeping the engine running — when oil pressure drops below a safe level. This protects the engine from damage, but it can be confusing because the generator sounds completely normal.

Check your oil level. If it's low, add the correct grade of oil, let the generator sit for a minute, then try resetting and restarting. If oil levels are fine but the warning light is still on, the sensor itself may be faulty.

7. You're Overloading the Generator

Every generator has a maximum wattage rating. Plug in more than it can handle and it will either trip its internal breaker (see #1 above) or simply fail to deliver usable power to any outlets.

To avoid overloading:

  • Know your generator's running wattage and surge wattage ratings
  • Prioritize essential loads: refrigerator, medical equipment, central AC or a window unit, basic lighting
  • Never try to power your entire home on a portable generator — it's not designed for that
  • Connect appliances one at a time and watch for signs of strain

If you find yourself repeatedly running out of capacity during Oklahoma storm outages, it may be time to evaluate a whole-home standby generator sized properly for your square footage and electrical load.

Standby Generator vs. Portable: Does It Matter?

Yes — the failure modes above apply to both, but they show up differently.

Portable generators are more prone to residual magnetism loss and connection issues because they're stored and moved. Whole-home standby generators (like those we install from Lennox and other trusted brands) are permanently wired, automatically tested, and maintained on a schedule — which means most of these problems are caught before an outage, not during one.

If your standby generator is running but your home has no power, the transfer switch is almost always the first place a technician will look. A properly installed and maintained transfer switch automatically disconnects your home from the utility grid and connects it to the generator the moment an outage is detected. If the transfer switch fails, the generator runs but power never reaches your circuits.

When to Call a Professional

You can safely check these things yourself:

  • Generator's internal breaker (reset button on the control panel)
  • Oil level
  • Visible connections for obvious corrosion or damage
  • Load — are you asking too much of the generator?

Everything else — AVR testing and replacement, alternator inspection, field flashing, transfer switch diagnostics, wiring faults — requires a licensed electrician with generator experience. Attempting these repairs without proper training risks making the problem worse, damaging the generator permanently, or creating a serious safety hazard.

If you're in Central Oklahoma and your generator is running but not delivering power, the licensed electrical team at Above + Beyond Service Company can diagnose the problem and get your backup power system working the way it should — before the next storm rolls through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my generator run but nothing turns on? The most common reasons are a tripped internal breaker, loss of residual magnetism in the alternator, a failed automatic voltage regulator (AVR), or a problem with your transfer switch. Start by checking the breaker and oil level, then call a professional if those check out.

Can I fix a generator that has no power output myself? You can safely reset a tripped breaker, check oil levels, and inspect connections for obvious damage. For anything involving the AVR, alternator, or transfer switch, call a licensed electrician — incorrect repairs can cause permanent damage or create electrical hazards.

How do I prevent my generator from losing power output? Run your generator under a load for 20–30 minutes at least once a month. Always disconnect your load before shutting it down. Store it in a clean, dry location. Schedule annual professional maintenance, especially before storm season in Oklahoma.

My whole-home standby generator is running but my house still has no power — what's wrong? The most likely culprit is the automatic transfer switch, which is what connects your generator's output to your home's electrical panel. A faulty or improperly installed transfer switch will allow the generator to run while your home stays dark. This requires a licensed electrician to diagnose and repair.

How long does it take to fix a generator that's running but not producing power? Simple fixes like resetting a breaker take minutes. A failed AVR can often be replaced same day. Alternator winding damage is more involved and may take longer depending on parts availability.
