Frequently Asked Questions

Along with some other helpful knowledge.

What types of water heaters are available?

The main types are conventional tank water heaters (gas or electric), tankless (on-demand) water heaters, and hybrid heat pump water heaters. Each has different upfront costs, energy efficiency ratings, and best-use scenarios.

Above + Beyond's licensed plumbers can help you evaluate which type best fits your household's hot water demand, available space, and energy goals. We install and service all major brands and types.

How long does a water heater last?

A conventional tank water heater typically lasts 8 to 12 years, while a tankless model can last 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance. Factors like water quality, usage patterns, and maintenance frequency all affect lifespan.

Above + Beyond recommends annual maintenance including flushing sediment and checking the anode rod to maximize your water heater's lifespan. Our plumbers can assess your current unit and let you know where it stands.

How often should I maintain my water heater?

We recommend annual maintenance for all water heaters. This includes flushing sediment from the tank, inspecting the anode rod, checking the pressure relief valve, and verifying thermostat accuracy.

Regular maintenance prevents efficiency loss, extends the life of your unit, and reduces the risk of unexpected failures. Above + Beyond offers maintenance as a standalone service or as part of Saige's Loyalty Club membership.

How can I improve my water heater's energy efficiency?

Simple steps include lowering the thermostat to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, insulating exposed hot water pipes, flushing sediment annually, and ensuring the unit is properly sized for your household's demand.

If your water heater is more than 10 years old, upgrading to a high-efficiency model can significantly reduce your energy bills. Above + Beyond can help you compare options and calculate potential savings.

What size water heater does my home need?

Water heater sizing depends on your household's peak hot water demand. A 40-gallon tank is typically sufficient for 2-3 people, while a 50-gallon or larger tank is recommended for 4+ person households. Tankless systems are sized by flow rate (GPM).

Above + Beyond's plumbers calculate your specific hot water needs based on the number of bathrooms, appliances, and simultaneous usage patterns to recommend the right size for reliable performance.

Should I repair or replace my water heater?

If your water heater is under 8 years old and the repair cost is less than half the replacement cost, repair usually makes sense. If the unit is older, requires frequent repairs, or shows signs of tank corrosion, replacement is the better investment.

Above + Beyond's plumbers provide honest assessments and will never push a replacement when a repair will do. We present both options with clear pricing so you can make an informed decision.

I had a busted pipe somewhere on my property that was leaking 850 gallons of water an hour😢. Arren arrived within an hour of my call and immediately identified the problem. It was such a blessing to meet him and he carries himself with a profound sense of peace and calmness. What started as a stressful situation for me was resolved quickly, efficiently, and thoroughly. In addition, I was only charged the service fee of $109. I was dumbfounded and expected it to be much more. I highly recommend Above + Beyond and will request Arren again, should another problem arise. Stella was definitely impressed 🙌🩷

Chance, Felix, Cody, Jalyn and LEE saved my life with hot water. Emergencies are never fun but these guys made this potentially crappy situation tolerable. Plus, I’ll be having a hot bath tonight. Thanks!!!

Above + Beyond went Above + Beyond! We have had so many issues trying to get a new sink. We thought the sink we bought fit and it DID NOT. I was very annoyed/overwhelmed/pregnant and they went and found me a sink that fit that was exactly what we were looking for! Chance and Preston brought it over and got it installed quickly. They were very nice and did more than we expected to make sure we got exactly what we wanted! 100/10 recommend. We will be using them for all of our plumbing needs from here on out!

Robert did an excellent job reviewing our home's annual plumbing maintenance needs (our first since purchasing the home). The inspection was thorough and professional, including the annual water heater flushing. The inspection found a few areas of wear in the 15-year-old fixtures, most of which we were already aware of, and all consistent with a previous rental home in Oklahoma. Robert explained the options, including doing nothing at this time. However, since the cost of the repairs was reasonable and a worthwhile investment for peace of mind, we chose to stay on top of things and go ahead with the minor repairs. We're very happy with Robert and Above + Beyond Plumbing.

I had to call them in as reinforcements when my DIY job turned into something much bigger. Every tech that came out was so nice, professional, and thorough. The did a terrific job and I wouldn’t hesitate to call them out again for any future job.

Robert was awesome! He arrived on time, used proper inspection equipment to check the pipes, and clearly explained the results. I really appreciate his honesty and transparency about the cost. Very professional and easy to work with.

Above + Beyond were great from start to finish. Starting with Ashley who was happy to help. She listened asked great questions, and provided opinions (Not up selling points). She went above and beyond. I called a little after 8am and Lee (Tech Plumber) was at my door before 10am! What can I say Lee was like the brother in law you love! He was VERY attentive present in the moment from start to finish. in addition to educating me on my plumbing issue he walked me through the root cause and provided opinions (Not selling points) he was thorough in making sure I had resolution before wrapping things up and he made himself available for questions. I hope but I believe this is the company’s core value to go above and beyond. They exceeded my expectations as they went above and beyond for me. Oh yes Great price!!!😉
