Why Your AC Runs Constantly but Your Home Won't Cool

It's 102°F in Oklahoma City today. Your AC has been running since 8am. It's 2pm and the house is at 81°F. You've checked the thermostat three times. Nothing has changed. The system is clearly running — you can hear it, feel the air — but the temperature isn't dropping.

Before you call for a service call, there's a question worth answering first: is your system actually broken, or is it doing exactly what it's capable of doing on a day like today?

The answer determines whether you need a technician or just a realistic expectation for the next few hours.

The 20-Degree Rule and What It Means This Week

Most residential AC systems are designed to maintain indoor temperatures approximately 20 degrees cooler than the outdoor temperature. That's not a guarantee — it's a guideline for what a properly sized, properly functioning, well-maintained system can realistically achieve.

At 102°F outside, a 20-degree differential gets you to 82°F indoors. At 97°F, you're looking at 77°F. On a week where OKC highs are running between 96°F and 102°F every single day, a system that's holding your home in the high 70s to low 80s during peak afternoon hours is not failing. It's working correctly under genuinely extreme conditions.

The air from your supply vents is only mildly cool or approaching room temperature. Cold air from the vents is the clearest confirmation the system is actively cooling. If the air barely feels cool, the system is not transferring heat effectively. Common causes: low refrigerant, a dirty or frozen evaporator coil, a failing compressor.

Airflow from vents is noticeably weak. Reduced airflow means the blower isn't moving enough air across the evaporator coil. Common causes: a clogged air filter, a failing blower motor, closed or blocked vents.
