Why Does My AC Smell Musty When It Turns On?

You flip the thermostat to cool, the system kicks on, and within a few seconds a musty, stale odor rolls through the vents. It fades after a few minutes. Then the next time the system cycles on, it's back.

This is one of the most common HVAC complaints we hear in the OKC metro — and one of the most consistently misunderstood. The smell is not coming from your ducts, it's not your filter, and it won't go away on its own. Here's what's actually causing it and what it takes to fix it.

What That Smell Actually Is

The musty odor coming from your AC vents is the smell of biological growth — mold, mildew, or bacteria — living somewhere inside your HVAC system and being circulated through your home every time the fan runs.

Your air conditioner does two things simultaneously: it cools air and it removes moisture from it. As warm, humid air from your home passes across the cold evaporator coil, moisture in the air condenses on the coil's surface — the same physics as a cold glass of water sweating on a humid day. That condensed water is supposed to drain away through the condensate drain line. When the system runs correctly, this happens continuously and efficiently.

Check that no vents are blocked. Restricted airflow makes the coil problem worse. Confirm every supply vent is open and that furniture hasn't been pushed against any return air grills.

This is not a homeowner DIY task — the coil's aluminum fins are fragile, the cleaning solutions require proper application and neutralization, and accessing the coil requires disassembling panels in a way that risks damage without the right tools and experience.

A professional evaporator coil cleaning involves accessing the air handler, removing the access panel to reach the coil, applying a foaming no-rinse coil cleaner or a rinse-required solution appropriate for your coil type, allowing it to penetrate and kill biological growth, flushing the drain pan and confirming the drain line is clear, and restoring the unit to operation.

Why does the smell go away after the AC runs for a few minutes? Can I clean the evaporator coil myself? Homeowners sometimes attempt this with over-the-counter coil cleaners. My AC is only two years old and it already smells musty. Is that normal? Not normal, but not unusual in OKC's climate.
