Frequently Asked Questions

Along with some other helpful knowledge.

  • What happens if it rains during fence installation?

Light rain usually doesn’t stop fence installation, though it can slow the work. Heavy rain or muddy conditions may require rescheduling for quality and safety reasons — setting posts in waterlogged soil compromises the footing’s integrity. If concrete has already been poured, light rain generally doesn’t affect curing because concrete needs moisture to cure properly.

Above & Beyond Fencing monitors weather forecasts and communicates proactively if conditions may affect your project timeline. We’d rather reschedule a day than compromise the quality of your fence.

  • Does Above + Beyond Fencing handle HOA fence requirements?

Yes, many homeowners associations have specific requirements for fence materials, styles, heights, and colors. Some HOAs require architectural review board approval before installation. Common HOA restrictions include banning chain link in front yards, requiring specific wood types, or mandating uniform fence heights throughout a subdivision.

Above + Beyond Fencing reviews your HOA's fence guidelines during the estimate process. We recommend compliant materials and designs, and can prepare documentation for your HOA approval submission.

  • How are fence posts installed?

Fence posts are installed by digging a hole (typically 10–12 inches in diameter and 24–36 inches deep), placing the post, and pouring concrete around it. The post is leveled vertically and braced until the concrete sets. Post spacing is usually 6–8 feet on center. End posts, corner posts, and gate posts require larger holes and more concrete because they bear greater structural loads.

Above & Beyond Fencing uses commercial-grade concrete mix and sets posts below the frost line. We verify every post for plumb and alignment before moving to the next stage of construction.

  • What should I do before my fence is installed?

Before installation day, clear the fence line of debris, furniture, planters, and any removable obstructions. Trim back bushes or tree branches that overhang the planned fence path. Ensure your installer has access to the property through a gate or side yard. If you have underground utilities, make sure the locate service has been called — a reputable fence company will coordinate this.

Above & Beyond Fencing handles utility locates and site preparation guidance as part of every project. During your estimate, we’ll walk the fence line with you and identify anything that needs attention before build day.

  • What causes fence posts to lean?

Fence posts lean when their concrete footing shifts, erodes, or was inadequately sized during original installation. Expansive clay soil that expands when wet and contracts when dry is a common cause in many areas. Wind loading, root growth, and impact damage can also push posts out of alignment over time. Posts set without concrete or at insufficient depth are especially vulnerable.

Above & Beyond Fencing resets leaning posts by removing the old footing, setting the post to the correct depth, and pouring fresh concrete. For chronic leaning in problematic soil, we may recommend deeper footings or larger-diameter posts.

  • Can you match existing fence materials during repair?

Yes, we carry common fence materials and can match most existing wood, chain link, and iron fences. For standard cedar and pressure-treated pine, matching is straightforward. Older or specialty materials may require sourcing from specialty suppliers. Even when an exact match isn’t available, we find the closest option and blend the repair to minimize visual differences.

Above & Beyond Fencing takes matching seriously — a repair should look like part of the original fence, not a patch. We assess your existing fence and recommend the best approach.

  • How much does fence repair cost?

Fence repair costs range from $150 to $800 for most residential jobs. Simple fixes like replacing a few broken pickets or tightening a loose post cost $150–$300. Resetting a leaning post or replacing a section of fence runs $300–$600. Extensive storm damage repair with multiple posts and sections can reach $500–$800+.

Above & Beyond Fencing provides free assessments and transparent repair quotes. We itemize the work so you understand exactly what you’re paying for.

  • How do I know if my fence needs repair or replacement?

If damage is limited to a few boards, a single leaning post, or a broken gate, repair is usually the better investment. If more than 30–40% of the fence is damaged, rotting, or leaning, full replacement is typically more cost-effective because repair labor on extensive damage approaches the cost of a new fence with shorter remaining lifespan.

Above & Beyond Fencing provides free assessments for fence damage. We give honest recommendations — if repair extends your fence’s life significantly, we’ll recommend it. If replacement makes more financial sense, we’ll explain why.

  • What type of gate hardware is best?

Stainless steel and hot-dipped galvanized hardware provide the best durability for outdoor gates. Heavy-duty strap hinges are ideal for larger gates, while T-hinges work well for standard pedestrian gates. Self-closing spring hinges are recommended for pool and pet enclosures. For latches, gravity latches and thumb latches are common residential choices, while lockable latches add security.

Above & Beyond Fencing uses commercial-grade gate hardware rated for the gate’s size and weight. Quality hardware is one of the most important factors in long-term gate performance.

  • Why is my gate sagging?

Gate sagging is typically caused by one or more of these issues: worn or undersized hinges, a leaning gate post, a gate frame that has lost its square (often from moisture damage), or the gate itself being too heavy for its hardware. Gravity and repeated use gradually pull the free end of the gate downward, causing it to drag on the ground or fail to latch.

Above & Beyond Fencing diagnoses the root cause of sagging gates and fixes it properly. Depending on the issue, the repair may involve replacing hinges, reinforcing the post, adding a diagonal brace, or rebuilding the gate frame.

We had an excellent experience with Above + Beyond. They installed a wrought iron fence around approx an acre and it looks amazing!! Chris was very diligent in making sure we got what we wanted, and was a great communicator during the whole process. Rusty showed up on time and professionally installed the fence exactly where and how we wanted. We will highly recommend these guys!

    - Donna Krah

5 stars is not enough for the work they did on my fence. It was in terrible shape and needed to be replaced. Now, my new fence is the envy of the whole neighborhood. I really like the stain they used. Thank you Chris and team for a job well done.

    - Rob Mott‍

Rusty and his guys have done not one but two fence projects for me. One wood and one chain link. Both came out awesome and great quality. They also fixed a couple broken boards on my gate (my fault). They’re reasonably priced and do quality work. I will go back to them for any fencing needs. Highly recommend.
