What should I do if my garbage disposal is jammed?

If your disposal is jammed, turn it off immediately and never put your hand inside the unit. You can try using an Allen wrench in the hex socket at the bottom of the unit to manually rotate the flywheel and free the jam.

What can and cannot go in a garbage disposal?

You can safely put soft food scraps, small bones, fruit peels, and cooked vegetables in your disposal. Always run cold water while the disposal is operating and for 15 seconds after turning it off to flush debris through the drain.

Never put grease, oil, fibrous vegetables like celery or corn husks, coffee grounds, pasta, rice, egg shells, or non-food items into your disposal. These materials cause jams, clogs, and premature wear on the grinding components.

Why is my garbage disposal leaking?

Garbage disposal leaks typically originate from three areas: the sink flange at the top, the dishwasher connection on the side, or the drain pipe connection at the bottom. A leak from the bottom of the unit itself usually means the internal seal has failed.

Robert did an excellent job reviewing our home's annual plumbing maintenance needs (our first since purchasing the home). The inspection was thorough and professional, including the annual water heater flushing. The inspection found a few areas of wear in the 15-year-old fixtures, most of which we were already aware of, and all consistent with a previous rental home in Oklahoma.
